What is Kundalini Energy?

Kundalini Energy – The Divine Force of Awakening

Kundalini energy has held a special place for centuries in Eastern spiritual traditions, particularly in Hinduism, Tantra, and yogic practices. It is described as the primordial life force that lies dormant at the base of the spine, in the pelvic region, corresponding to the root chakra (Muladhara). In Sanskrit texts, it is symbolically depicted as a coiled serpent—wrapped three times, waiting to be awakened and rise upward along the central energetic channel of the body known as the sushumna.

This spiritual energy is considered the essence of life and the infinite potential within every human being. According to ancient spiritual masters, each person carries within them the hidden possibility of awakening Kundalini—an awakening that may include healing of the body and mind, opening to higher states of consciousness, mystical experiences, and the ultimate aim of the soul: self-realization and enlightenment.

Symbolism and Meaning of Kundalini

In Sanskrit, the word kundal means “ring” or “coil.” Kundalini is therefore translated as “she who is coiled.” The symbol of the serpent is not accidental—it represents transformation, wisdom, and vital power across many cultures. Though dormant, this energy embodies the highest potential for human development.

When it remains inactive, a person experiences life primarily through the senses, attachment to material reality, and the illusion of separation. However, its awakening opens the path to a deeper understanding of the nature of reality and one’s own soul.

The Path of Kundalini – A Journey Through the Chakras

The rising of Kundalini energy is described as a journey upward along the sushumna nadi, the central energetic channel running along the spine. Along this path, the energy passes through seven main chakras, each associated with a different dimension of life:

  • Muladhara (root chakra) – safety, grounding, survival

  • Svadhisthana (sacral chakra) – emotions, creativity, sensuality

  • Manipura (solar plexus chakra) – willpower, personal power, identity

  • Anahata (heart chakra) – love, empathy, balance

  • Vishuddha (throat chakra) – communication, truth, authenticity

  • Ajna (third eye chakra) – intuition, vision, inner guidance

  • Sahasrara (crown chakra) – unity, transcendence, divine consciousness

As the energy rises and opens successive centers, a person may experience healing on physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual levels. Each stage of this journey reveals deeper aspects of our inner potential.

Experiences of Kundalini Awakening

The awakening of this energy may manifest in various ways, from subtle sensations to profound transformative experiences. Commonly reported experiences include:

  • intense feelings of bliss and ecstasy

  • vibrations, tingling, or warmth along the spine

  • spontaneous body movements (kriyas) that support energy flow

  • visions, vivid dreams, mystical experiences

  • a sense of unity with the entire universe

  • release of old emotions and trauma

  • awakening of inner wisdom and intuition

However, this process is not always easy—Kundalini awakening is sometimes called the “fire of transformation.” This energy can bring unresolved emotions, fears, or blockages to the surface, calling for healing. Therefore, spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of guidance, patience, and proper preparation for this path.

Kundalini as a Path to Self-Realization

From a spiritual perspective, awakening Kundalini is not the ultimate goal in itself, but rather a tool for inner evolution. It is a process that leads from the limited perspective of the ego toward the awareness of unity with all that exists.

When the energy reaches the crown chakra, a person may experience the state known as samadhi—complete integration, enlightenment, and direct realization of divine nature. In this state, the ego dissolves, and life becomes an expression of love, harmony, and co-creation with cosmic consciousness.

The Significance of Kundalini in the Modern World

Although the concept of Kundalini originates from ancient Indian traditions, its message remains deeply relevant today. In a world dominated by stress, constant rush, and disconnection from nature, Kundalini awakening reminds us to return to the source—our inner truth, peace, and love.

More and more people around the world are experiencing spontaneous awakenings or consciously practicing techniques that support the activation of this energy, such as:

  • Kundalini yoga

  • pranayama (breathwork)

  • meditation and mantra chanting

  • sound and vibration work (e.g., crystal bowls, gongs)

  • energy healing and subtle body practices

Through these practices, it becomes possible to discover inner potential, heal trauma, and step onto the path of a fully conscious and meaningful life.

Sacred Power Within Us

Kundalini energy is not merely a mystical concept—it is a living, sacred force present in every human being. Its awakening marks the beginning of a profound transformation that touches every dimension of existence. It is a process that requires mindfulness, humility, and openness of the heart, yet it leads to experiencing one of the greatest gifts possible: union with the Divine and with one’s true nature.

What You May Attract When Kundalini Is Active and All Chakras Are Open

When Kundalini energy is active, your entire energetic field begins to vibrate at a higher frequency. It is as if you become a magnet, attracting into your life exactly what resonates with your soul. When this energy flows freely through all chakras, harmony and coherence emerge—in the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. The world begins to respond to your inner vibration in remarkable ways.

You may attract:

  • Love and healthy relationships – heart energy radiates pure love, attracting people who are open, authentic, and ready for mutual growth. Relationships become deeper and more conscious, and karmic bonds are healed.

  • Abundance and prosperity – the root chakra and solar plexus create a sense of security and stability, opening doors to professional success, financial flow, and material opportunities aligned with your life purpose.

  • New opportunities and inspiration – active sacral and throat chakras allow creative energy to flow freely. You attract situations that expand your potential and people who support your visions and projects.

  • Deep wisdom and inner guidance – the third eye chakra opens intuition and inner direction. Life begins guiding you in the right direction, and events unfold with synchronicity.

  • A sense of unity and spiritual teachers – crown chakra energy connects you with higher dimensions of consciousness. You attract people, mentors, and experiences that support your spiritual path and deepen your connection with the divine.

  • Harmony of health and body – the free flow of energy through all chakras supports the body’s natural ability to regenerate. You begin attracting practices and methods that promote balance, healing, and longevity.

  • Synchronicity and meaningful coincidences – in a fully activated Kundalini state, it may feel as if the universe responds to your intentions. Opportunities, encounters, and experiences appear that help fulfill your soul’s purpose.

It can be said that when Kundalini is awakened, your life becomes a reflection of your purest intention. You no longer need to chase things—they begin to come to you, because your energetic field radiates clarity, strength, and light.

Neurophenomenological Approach to Kundalini Experiences

Neurophenomenology is a field of research initiated by Francisco Varela, proposing that to truly understand consciousness, we must combine subjective experience (phenomenology) with objective measurement (neurobiology, EEG, fMRI, hormones).

Instead of treating mystical experiences as “hallucinations” or “disorders,” researchers increasingly approach them as valid data—descriptions of inner experiences that can be studied alongside brain and body activity.

Researchers and Their Perspectives

Zoran Josipovic (New York University) studies nondual meditation, whose effects resemble Kundalini awakening experiences—states of unity and boundless awareness.

fMRI research shows that during such practices, the typical division between the task-positive network and the default mode network diminishes.

Instead, a coherent and harmonized pattern of activity emerges, corresponding to the subjective experience of “ego dissolution” and unity with the world.

Andrew Newberg (University of Pennsylvania) researches neurotheology—how the brain responds to prayer, meditation, and mystical experiences.

Studies of individuals in deep spiritual states (including meditators, Sikhs, and Franciscans) show decreased activity in the parietal lobe, the brain area responsible for spatial orientation and the boundaries of the self.

At the same time, activity increases in the prefrontal cortex, associated with focus and intention.

Participants described this as “a sense of unity with God or the cosmos,” closely resembling descriptions of Kundalini awakening.

Kundalini in This Perspective

From a neurophenomenological perspective, Kundalini awakening is:

  • not treated as “unexplainable magic,”

  • but as a process in which subjective experiences correspond with measurable changes, such as:

    • brain waves (gamma, theta, hemispheric synchronization)

    • hormones (e.g., increased dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin)

    • nervous system changes (spontaneous tremors, kriyas, waves of heat)

    • a sense of spiritual opening (phenomenology)

Why This Matters

This approach:

  • builds a bridge between spirituality and science

  • shows that Kundalini experiences can be studied rather than pathologized

  • helps people undergoing awakening processes understand their experiences as transformative crises rather than purely psychiatric disorders
